To have good audio (this applies to lossless or lossy) you need the source audio to be in an encoding that is compatible at every step through to the DAC driving your amp/speakers. The Infuse app (which can natively connect to a Plex server if desired), however, supports decoding both TrueHD and DTS-HD, within the app itself. The Plex app natively supports decoding DTS-HD to LPCM audio (a lossless conversion), but requires the server to transcode lossless TrueHD to multi-channel FLAC for playback on the Apple TV (also a lossless conversion), so that will require some (not too much though) CPU resources to be available server side. But, as you’ve already mentioned, this won’t matter if you only have a 5.1 system though, they will still play back losslessly, just without the height channel information. It does not support passing-through object based lossless audio formats like TrueHD-based Dolby Atmos, or DTS:X, because lossless audio is decoded into the LPCM format before being sent out by the Apple TV. While what the other poster mentioned about everything forced to output at 48kHz is true, almost all movie and tv audio is natively 48kHz, whether lossless (on Plex or Infuse) or lossy from a streaming service, so this is a non-issue for movies and tv. Plex supports lossless audio on the Apple TV, up to 7.1 channels. Let me try to answer this as clearly as possible(it probably still won’t be haha).
